FAQ

PRIVATE INVESTIGATION FAQ’S

  • What training does a PI have to go through to become certified?

The training and certification requirements for private investigators (PIs) can vary by jurisdiction. However, PIs typically need to meet certain criteria, which may include:

    • Completion of a formal training program in investigative techniques.
    • Meeting a minimum age requirement.
    • Passing a background check.
    • Obtaining a license or certification from a relevant state or local agency.
    • A minimum of 6,000 hours of investigative services.

The specific requirements can differ significantly from one place to another, so it's essential to check with your local regulatory authority for precise information.

  • What a PI can do and can't do.

PIs have the legal authority to conduct investigations within the scope of their license, which may include:

    • Surveillance
    • Gathering evidence
    • Interviewing witnesses
    • Background checks
    • Locating missing persons
    • Serving legal documents

However, PIs must operate within the confines of the law and adhere to ethical guidelines. They cannot engage in illegal activities such as trespassing, wiretapping, or impersonating law enforcement.

  • Can a PI guarantee results?

It's important to note that PIs should be cautious about guaranteeing specific results. The outcome of an investigation can depend on various factors, including the complexity of the case, the availability of information, and the cooperation of individuals involved. While PIs can promise their best efforts, they cannot always guarantee a particular outcome.

"No Results" in an investigation can indeed be informative. It may indicate that the information sought is genuinely unavailable or that the circumstances surrounding the case are more complex than initially anticipated.

  • Can you get the same results for a background check through an internet search?

Background checks conducted by PIs often involve more comprehensive and reliable information than what can be found through simple internet searches. PIs have access to databases and resources that may not be available to the public. They can verify the accuracy of information and provide a more in-depth analysis.

Internet searches can provide basic information, but they may not always yield accurate or up-to-date results. PIs can ensure that the information gathered is legally obtained and usable for specific purposes, such as employment background checks or legal proceedings.
